The Way
Mt 3:1-12, Is 35:1-6a, 10
Words and music: Gregory Stephen Popp
A Voice Cries Out
In the wilderness
Prepare the way of the Lord!
Desert will bloom
And the dry land exulted
Make straight a highway for God
“Are you the one, that was foretold?
“Are you the promise, of ages old?” †
“The blind now see, and the lame now run
Yes I am He, the promised one” ‡
“I need to be washed clean by You
Yet it is you who comes to me?Ӡ
“Let it be done as my Father wills” ‡
“This is my son, and I am well pleased” Ω
Prepare ye the way of the Lord
Prepare ye the way

Greg's Story
I wrote this song during Advent one year. I wanted to do a prelude piece that was spirited, but still conveyed the message from the gospel reading for that week. The "classic" songs in the hymnal definitely had the message part, but the "spirited" part was sorely lacking. I couldn't find a contemporary Christian song that said what we wanted to say, so I sat down and began to write. This song is the result.
As you listen to the song, the lead vocalist changes during the verses. Chris Himstedt sings the part of John The Baptist, and I sing the words of Jesus, as well as the "voice of God". You may or may not have noticed that there are little icons in the text on the left that take you to a footnote describing who is saying what. |
