Lyrics: True Presence - 03 - Faith

Faith
Words and music: Gregory Stephen Popp

When I see the old man who’s lost his wife
Left heartbroken with half a life
Bow his head and with reverence breathe
“Our Father..”,
I  believe.

When the children laugh I can hear Your love
When the blind can see I can see Your love
But blest are they who have never seen
Yet sing with voices,
“I believe!”

Not by words but by deeds we are known
We may not see the fruit of seeds we have sown
We walk the path of faith by grace from above
And in the end, all that’s remembered is love

When I kiss the sweetness of summer rain
When I see Your hand in the smallest grain
When  I walk the narrow road and I feel
I can go no farther
 I  believe.

Greg's Story

This one was simply an inspiration from observation. It was the first song "destined" for this CD and my first attempt at writing anything in the "Contemporary Christian" musical style. I have seen so many people in our parish who have lost someone they loved - usually a spouse, sometimes even more tragically, a child. In the face of such devastating sorrow, they could easily have turned their back on God, blaming him for taking away someone so dearly loved. But they didn't. Their continuing faith and dedication was the inspiration for this song.

I always was a skeptic. I'm from the "show me" state, after all... I yearn for that touch of the unexplainable. I would love to see or experience anything that I couldn't explain. But I never have. And as the Lord said to "doubting" Thomas: "Blessed are they who have not seen, yet believe". So I've got that going for me..which is nice.

It occurred to me during the period of time that I taught RCIA at our parish, that the people I was teaching, I could very well never see again. Some of them might move out of the parish, some of them might move away, some of them never even belonged to our parish in the first place. What will change in their lives as a result of becoming Catholic - as a result of something I may (or may not) have said to them? Will they do great things in the name of our Father?

We may not see the fruit of seeds we have sown.
